The Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy’s latest addition to its Virtual Health Fair Webinar Series is “Anxiety Disorders and Management.” The webinar series is put together by student pharmacists under the supervision of the college’s faculty. See full catalog of series.
Be a part of the first live episode of Wailau and apply to be a storyteller! Wailau is a series of themed storytelling events that build connections between members of the campus and wider community. The application deadline for the upcoming episode is Tuesday, Sept. 6, with applications accepted until the storyteller lineup is set. The event theme, “New Beginnings,” might explore a life change, a fresh start, or a new adventure. Learn more about being a Wailau storyteller.
Get caught up on the Ka Leo o ka Uluau podcast series, designed to ho‘okama‘āina (acquaint) listeners to the island of Hawai‘i and its mo‘olelo (storied accounts) of its special places. Season II started in January 2022 with episodes released on the Hilo moon phase of every malama or mahina (lunar month) to honor this indigenous practice of keeping time. Each 2022 episode focuses on traditional sustainable practices:

- Feb. 1-March 1, Kaulua: Lawaiʻa Pono (traditional fishing practices).

- May 1-30, Ikiiki: Hana Lei (lei making).
- May 31-June 28, Ka‘aona: Kaulana Mahina (moon calendar).
- June 29-July 27, Hinaia‘ele‘ele: Agroforestry and ‘Ulu (breadfruit).
- July 28-August 26, Māhoemua: Mahi ‘ai, kalo, Hāloa (farming/cultivating).

Covid Updates
Masking Policy: Masking is required indoors in classrooms, shared laboratory spaces, and tightly confined educational spaces, such as advising offices, and highly recommended in all other indoor settings on campuses through September 19, 2022. Campus will be notified of any updates. Refer to the UH Hilo COVID-19 webpage for more details on masking and other safety practices relating to protection of yourself and others from COVID-19.
The College of Business and Economics continues its study on digital vaccination management (approved by UH Institutional Review Board) where digital tools and platforms for managing the vaccination process in the COVID-19 pandemic are examined. Faculty and staff are encouraged to take the anonymous online survey if you have received at least one vaccination in the state of Hawai’i.
Events
Registration continues for “Navigating Tough Conversations in Statistical Collaboration,” an American Statistical Association Council of Chapters Traveling Course, to be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, 9:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m, University Classroom Building, room 127. There is no cost to attend, and topics include data ownership and accessibility to determining appropriate analysis procedures. Online registration required.

Faculty
Ron Gordon, Professor of Communication, conducted a 90-minute Zoom session in late July with 24 doctoral students from across China gathered at Hangzhou University in Zhejiang province. The sole “foreign specialist” invitation was extended by Shi-xu, distinguished professor and director of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Discourse Studies at Hangzhou. The session’s theme was “What More is ‘Communication’ Than What We Have Said It to Be?”
Lindy Hern, Associate Professor of Sociology, did a recent podcast interview about her book, Single Payer Healthcare Reform: Grassroots Mobilization and the Turn Against Establishment Politics in the Medicare for All Movement.
Operations
Parking on campus remains in “non-instructional day” status for the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Parking zones will not be restricted, with the exception of Residential Housing parking zones, which require a housing parking permit. There will also be no charge for visitor parking. Overnight parking restrictions will continue.
Approximately 20 parking stalls near the makai end of the Student Services Center are blocked off until Oct. 2, 2022 to allow for the storage and staging of materials for a construction project occurring at the Student Services Center.

- Campus Center Dining Room is open for take-out, indoor and outdoor dining. Covered outdoor seating and limited indoor seating are available. Fall semester hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Online food ordering or in-person ordering available.
- Deja Brew: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Hale Lako, the student supplies house operated by the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management, continues to accept donations of household goods and supplies, packaged foods, gently used clothing, and other items for UH students. Donations may be dropped off at the college’s breezeway or at Hale Lako when it is open. Hale Lako is located in PB 22, Room 101, and will be open for students with a valid UH identification every Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. starting Aug. 23, 2022. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Lissa3@hawaii.edu.
