The 2002 Annual Spring Food Drive at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is underway through May 15. The drive is in conjunction with the UH System Annual Food Drive. Donations via UH Hilo will be given to the The Food Basket, Hawaiʻi Island’s Food Bank, to help fight hunger on Hawaiʻi Island.

“Our goal this year is to raise $2,000.00 in monetary donations and 500 lbs of non-perishable food,” says UH Hilo organizer Maile Boggeln in an email to the university community. “Last year with your support we were able to raise a total of $4.004.78 and 931 lbs so I am hoping we will be successful in crushing our goal this year.”
There are several options to donate
- Make a monetary donation. Monetary donations can be made online at the Hawaiʻi Food Bank. When donating add “UH Hilo Food Drive” in the additional comments section to ensure that the donation is credited to the UH Hilo drive. In the dropdown menu provided, select the site for donation; the recommended site is “The Food Basket-Hawaiʻi Island Food Bank” as this will ensure the donation stays in the local Hawaiʻi Island community. Recurring donations will be attributed to the UH Hilo Food Drive. For more info, contact organizer Maile Boggeln or refer to FAQ PDF.
Purchase a T-shirt. Proceeds from Food Bank T-Shirts will be donated to Hawaiʻi Island Food Basket and are credited back to the UH Hilo Drive. Limited edition t-shirt can be preordered for $20-$25 depending on size. To credit the purchase to the UH Hilo drive, add “State Food Drive-UH Hilo Food Drive” under the additional comments section. Shipping is free within the state and a $5.00 charge for orders going to the U.S. continent. Shirts will be mailed out as soon as they arrive from the manufacturer after the pre-sale ends; allow up to 3-5 weeks for delivery.- Make a non-perishable food donation. Drop off your donations at Campus Center 214, The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on the third floor of the Student Services Building, or the Center for Community Engagement at Office Portable Building 5. Scheduled pick-ups can be arranged by contacting Maile Boggeln.

Food insecurity is a serious issue in our community
Each year The Food Basket serves one in five Hawaiʻi residents, providing nutritional assistance to those who are most vulnerable in local communities. With a donation of $10 the food basket can provide as many as 25 meals.
“Food insecurity is a serious issue in our community and COVID-19 and the inflations over the last year have only increased that need,” says Boggeln in an email to the university community. “According to the Hawaiʻi Food Bank, 1 in 6 residents of Hawaiʻi will struggle with food this year and the most vulnerable of these will be Keiki and Kupuna. Together we can help to support our community.”
