KITV News reports that basketball mini camps have resumed at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. The camps are a time-honored tradition for local players on Hawai’i Island.

Coaches David Kaneshiro, women’s basketball, and Kaniela Ainoa, men’s basketball, both attended camp when they were growing up on Hawai‘i Island.

“We were inspired so now it’s our job to do the same thing,” says Ainoa. “Not being able to do this last year, one of the biggest things I’ve looked forward to is this camp. It’s a huge tradition here, giving back to the youth is a big deal.”

The camp is smaller due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the free camps still feature basketball drills on the fundamentals of the game.

Organizers say the camps are a great opportunity to not just connect with the keiki of the Hilo community, but also inspire youth basketball on Hawai‘i Island.
