The 2021 Hawai‘i State Legislature adjourned on April 29. Kalbert Young, UH vice president for budget and finance and chief financial officer, provides a UH legislative recap.

 Community Outreach

Donations for UH Hilo’s annual Spring Food Drive ends Saturday, May 15. UH Hilo’s record-setting goal is to raise $2,000 in monetary donations and 350 pounds of non-perishable food. Click here for details about donating.

2021 Spring Commencement: UH Hilo’s virtual 2021 Spring Commencement is scheduled for May 15; keynote is Prof. Lorna Tsutsumi. Approximately 571 students have petitioned for degrees and/or certificates.

Human Resources

Open enrollment for the Hawai‘i Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund (EUTF) Active Employee and Premium Conversion Plan (PCP) ends Friday, May 14. Effective July 1, 2021, new EUTF rates based on Bargaining Units are now posted on the EUTF website. For more information, view 2021 Open Enrollment webpage – EUTF Health Benefits.

Road Closures for Commencement

The following areas on campus will be impacted Saturday, May 15, to celebrate UH Hilo’s Spring 2021 graduates in a drive-through event:

  • Road Closures (9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m):
    • Nowelo Street from ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center to entrance of Hale ʻIkena parking lot.
    • Main entrance will be a right turn only to the Bookstore in a one-way traffic pattern and exit by Theatre.
    • Theatre entrance to campus will be right turn only to back parking lot of Theatre and will exit by Old Gym.
  • Parking Lot Closures (9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.):
    • Zone 2 (Bookstore to Theatre).
    • Gravel lot by PB 21 (near swimming pool).
    • Haleʻōlelo.
    • Zone 6 (fronting CAFNRM to the Business Office).

Word of the Week

Above, join Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language student Joe Lindsey for a lesson on the Hawaiian word of the week, “Hale Kuamoʻo.” Hale Kuamoʻo is the research division of the college, advocating the use of ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i in the community. Hua Maka is a weekly video series produced by the college and edited by the UH Hilo Office of University Relations.
