Call for donations to UH Hilo Student Crisis Fund

Each year, UH Hilo provides assistance to students who are faced with some type of a personal emergency, but never before have we been hit by a crisis like COVID-19.

I write approximately every six months with a very similar message and I am reaching out to you again today because our students continue to need support during these trying times. Many of our students are struggling more than ever before to make it through each day. I know these have been challenging times for our faculty and staff as well, which is why I’d like to start by saying thank you for all that you have been doing to support our students wherever in the world they are right now.

As we approach the end of another semester and after witnessing the ongoing hardships that our students have endured in the past months, some of you have asked how else you might be able to help our students. Each year, UH Hilo provides assistance to students who are faced with some type of a personal emergency, but never before have we been hit by a pandemic like COVID-19.

Through federal relief funding, we awarded $1,497,363 to 1,498 students last week and this week, we awarded $651,216 to another 727 students. We continue to work through the list and hope to have another round of awards soon. Our students are appreciative for this assistance and many remain in need of additional support. Not all students qualify for federal relief funding, so we need to rely on institutional or foundation funds for this support. With our Urgent Student Relief Fund depleted last year and our UH Hilo Crisis Fund close to being depleted this year, we are asking for your help if you are in a position to give.

If you are interested in contributing to this fund, please click on the link below. All emergency funds are administered through a UH Foundation account, the UH Hilo Student Crisis Fund. You may contribute to this fund by going to the UH Hilo Student Crisis Fund web page.

The minimum donation is a one-time $10 gift. You may also select a recurring gift option if you prefer. If you are in a position to support, please know that every penny of every dollar will make a difference for our students. Feel free to share the link with others who share a passion for supporting our students.

Please accept my thanks in advance to those of you who will make a donation. Know that your gift will support a student in need at a time when s/he may need it the most.

Students who are in need of support during emergency situations may be referred to the UH Hilo Care Team.

Please let me know if you have any questions and know that I am grateful for the many ways that our UH Hilo ‘ohana provides care for our students. Continue to be safe and take good care of you and yours.

With sincere appreciation,

Farrah-Marie Gomes, Ph.D.
