UH Hilo, PacWest suspend all sports events due to COVID-19 concerns

In the interest of the safety of student-athletes, coaches, staff and the public at large, Vulcan teams will not be traveling or competing until at least March 30, in accordance with an announcement from the Pacific West Conference.

University of Hawai‘i at Hilo announced today that effective immediately, all Vulcan athletic events are suspended due to concerns surrounding COVID-19.

In the interest of the safety of student-athletes, coaches, staff and the public at large, Vulcan teams will not be traveling or competing until at least March 30, in accordance with an announcement from the Pacific West Conference. The decision was reached by the conference with the health and safety of the student-athletes, game day workers, athletic staffs and community in mind. The PacWest will continue to monitor and assess the situation and provide updates as they are made available.

NCAA Championships for the winter and spring sports have already been cancelled. The Pacific West Conference will determine later this month their next steps in regards to the remainder of the season and their own tournament championships.

On Thursday, both men’s and women’s tennis matches were cancelled on O‘ahu. The women’s golf team, who was already in Palm Desert, Calif., will return to Hilo on Friday.
