Photos: UH Hilo students share culture, dance, art and more at Chinese Spring Festival
Celebrating the Chinese New Year—the Year of the Rooster—students studying Chinese culture shared a variety of activities on the Library Lanai on Tuesday.

Students at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo taking a new course on Chinese Festivals and Culture (CHNS 398) held a Chinese Spring Festival on campus Tuesday.
“Students in this class are making group projects related to the Chinese festival customs and traditional culture to help make the event more culturally informative,” says Jiren Feng, associate professor of Chinese who is teaching the class. Feng is also program coordinator for the UH Hilo Chinese studies certificate program.
Celebrating the Chinese New Year—the Year of the Rooster—the students shared a variety of activities on the Library Lanai from 9:30 in the morning to 2:30 in the afternoon.

- Soaring Crane Qigong (Nobuko)
- Taiji Boxing Solo: Yang Style 108 Form Taiji (Ralph)
- Yangko Dancing A (Trisha, Haruka, Sebastian, group)
- Taiji Boxing Solo (Nicole)
- Yangko Dancing B (Nobuko and Prof. Feng)
- Taiji Boxing Solo: Wu Style 108 Standard Form Taiji (Ralph)
- Martial Arts Solo (Nicole), plus teaching audience members basic martial arts movements.
Activities
There was also a “Photo Corner” for people to take a picture with traditional Chinese spring couplets and beautiful new year decorations. Artists and calligraphers were doing zodiac signs, paper crafts, calligraphy, painting, blooming tea display, and posters introducing Chinese new year customs.
Students were also teaching Chinese language signs and how to say “Spring Festival,” “Wish you a prosperous year in the Year of Rooster,” Peace,” and “Friendship.”

Chinese Festivals and Culture
The new course on Chinese Festivals and Culture will become permanent (CHNS320) beginning with the fall 2017 semester.
