University of Hawai‘i at Hilo senior Bishop “Jed” Akao was recently awarded the 2016-17 Yasuji Takasaki Memorial Scholarship by the Hilo Orchid Society.

After working as a research assistant in pathology and genetics under Susan Miyasaka at the Komohana Research Extension Center and studying tissue culture in Michael Tanabe’s class, Akao envisions a possible future in Hawai‘i’s orchid and floriculture industry.

The scholarship is $1,500 per term and is named after Yasuji Takasaki, one of the founders of the Hawai‘i orchid industry.

Currently Akao is at Chico State University in California as part of a national student exchange program.
