The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo held its 2016 Spring Commencement on May 14.

Milestones at the event included the university awarding its first two doctorates in pharmaceutical sciences. The recipients of the first two doctor of philosophy in pharmaceutical sciences ever bestowed in the Pacific region were Susanne Youngren-Ortiz and Jan Sang-ngern.

Another milestone during commencement: at one point during the ceremonies, the 500th doctoral degree from UH Hilo was awarded, the majority of which have been from the College of Pharmacy.

Keynote speaker at commencement was Charles R. “Chipper” Wichman, Jr, and student speaker was Carrie Soo Hoo.

There were 632 candidates for a total of 855 degrees or certificates from the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Management (37); College of Arts and Sciences (529); College of Business and Economics (41); Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language (52); and the College of Pharmacy (172). Twenty-four others were candidates for various post-graduate honors.
