A new Emergency Operations Center has opened at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. An addition was added to the lower level of the University Classroom Building, located at the main entrance to campus, that now consolidates campus security and safety offices.
“An Emergency Operations Center allows for a faster response to the safety and security needs of our campus community,” says Darrell Mayfield, director of security at UH Hilo.

Also done over the course of two years starting in 2014 are campus wide data network improvements to support a new video surveillance system and blue light call stations expansion and improvements throughout campus.
An open house and untying of maile at the new office space was held on May 6 with remarks from Chancellor Don Straney, East Hawaiʻi legislators and other dignitaries. An informal walk-through tour followed the opening ceremonies.
