University of Hawai‘i at Hilo announces 2016 athletes of the year

Vulcans Salim Gloyd and Bailey Gaspar capped the 2015-16 seasons by being selected UH Hilo top athletes of the year. Other awards announced include those for outstanding academic achievement and community engagement.

Athletes of the Year

Salim Gloyd (men’s basketball) and Bailey Gaspar (women’s softball) capped the 2015-16 seasons by being selected University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Athletes of the Year, as announced at the annual Vulcans Awards Banquet on Monday night.

Gloyd, a 6’6″ senior from Bouake, Cote D’Ivoire, was selected the Pacific West Conference Newcomer of the Year, a first-team all-conference selection and PacWest Player of the Week on February 22. He led the PacWest in conference scoring with 22.9 points per game and was also fifth in rebounding at 8.6 per game.

Gaspar, a sophomore designated player, led the PacWest with a .506 batting average and .807 slugging percentage; is second in on base percentage at .581; third in hits (42); and fourth in walks (18). She was selected PacWest Newcomer of the Week on February 29.

The Ramon Goya Team of the Year award went to the Softball Team which finished the regular season at 32-17 overall and fifth in the PacWest at 21-9.

Academic awards

  • Sakai and Harue Wakakuwa Female Academic Athletes of the Year are Alia Alvarez (women’s basketball) and Kailah Buchanan (women’s soccer).
  • Joe and Harriett Estrella Male Academic Athlete of the Year is Micah Carter (baseball).
  • Academic Team of the Year went to Women’s Tennis.

Community engagement awards

  • The Team Community Engagement/Service Award went to the Women’s Cross Country program for their participation in 13 community events this past year including Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) track meets, Fun Runs, the Aha Pai‘ea Keiki Sports Challenge, and the Read Across America Day.
  • Volunteer of the Year went to volleyball coach Eddie Kalima.
  • Vulcan Booster of the Year was awarded to former president of the Booster Club Ed Torrison.
