Rachel Edwards, a soprano who graduated from the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo in 2014 with a degree in performing arts and a concentration in music, will give a concert in Hilo March 19 featuring unique interpretations of classics and Broadway favorites.

Quack Moore, musical director for the Hilo Palace Theater musicals and former musical director for Saturday Night Live, will accompany Edwards on piano. The evening also includes special guest Voices, a new vocal ensemble directed by Mark Allen Sheffield.

Asked about the recital, entitled, “Rachel’s First Awesome Recital,” Edwards says she was inspired by her voice teacher Sheffield.

“With his inspiration, I’ve put together my very first awesome recital, hence the title,” she explains. “The recital includes songs from different periods in history and in several languages.”

She says the recital is a stepping stone to her goal of pursuing a master degree in vocal performance beginning in 2017.

The evening’s program presents music for voice and piano, especially chosen to highlight the beauty and skill of the soprano voice. From a song cycle by early American composer Amy Beach, to Broadway favorites, the recital brings to life old favorites and new gems. Special guest Voices join Edwards in their debut performance.

“Please come and join me in this evening of songs, arias, and show tunes,” says Edwards.

Bios of the performers

Edwards has performed in local musicals such as Cinderella and The King and I. She recently played the character of Kim in the UH Hilo production of Miss Saigon.

Moore, a veteran of 25 years at the helm of Saturday Night Live’s band, devotes herself to the promotion and support of young, talented performers. This will be her first collaboration with Edwards.

Voices, a new vocal ensemble directed by Sheffield will give their debut performance. The group offers fresh interpretations of choral music ancient and modern.
