In as many weeks, two University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo women’s softball players have been selected PacWest Newcomer of the Week.
Victoria Garcia was selected PacWest Newcomer of the Week, announced Feb.22.
The junior infielder helped the Vulcans a four-game sweep of BYU-Hawaii to open PacWest Conference competition. She hit .615 (8-13) with three doubles, four RBI and six runs scored.
Garcia (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, a walk, and three runs scored in the third game of the series. Garcia is second in the PacWest in hits (24), RBI (18) and runs (18).
On the season, Garcia is batting .429 with 18 RBI, seven doubles and a pair of homeruns. Defensively, she has played 17 games at shortstop and has 28 putouts, 44 assists and six errors for a .923 fielding percentage.
Bailey Gaspar was selected PacWest Newcomer of the Week, announced March 1.
The sophomore designated player/infielder led UH Hilo (16-5 overall) to a four-game sweep of Notre Dame de Namur, bringing the Vulcans to 8-0 in PacWest play. She hit .600 (6-10) with two doubles, two walks and four RBI. She went 4-for-4 with two RBI in the series opener.
Through 20 games, Gaspar is batting .365 with 14 RBI, four doubles and homerun. She has walked 11 times while striking out six times.
This is the second Newcomer of the Week award for the Vulcans as junior shortstop Victoria Garcia was recognized the week before.
