Video: New Zealand television covers UH Hilo’s Hawaiian language revitalization program
NZ reporter Pere Wihongi visits the College of Hawaiian Language at UH Hilo.

Te Karere, a New Zealand television program that broadcasts entirely in the Maori language, sent reporter Pere Wihongi to Hawaiʻi to cover the Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
Highlighted during the visit are the contributions to Hawaiian language revitalization of Professor Timoti Karetu, a director of Te Panekiretanga o Te Reo Māori (School of Māori Language Excellence) at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa university, and Sir Tamati Reedy, who received his master of arts and doctor of philosophy in linguistics from UH over 30 years ago and returned to New Zealand to become a beloved public servant in Maori affairs.
Welcoming ceremonies for Wihongi (:22 in video) were held at Hale‘ōlelo (3:09), the new home for Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani college.
Interviewed for the report are Larry Kimura (:34), associate professor of Hawaiian language and Hawaiian studies at UH Hilo, and Keiki Kawaiʻaeʻa (1:03), director of the college.
