Four new members inducted into Vulcan Hall of Fame

The University of Hawaii at Hilo inducted three former athletes and a community physician into the Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame on Aug. 26.

Edward GuttelingDennis O’BrienFlavio Nucci, and Edna Togiai were honored at a celebration held at Nani Mau Gardens.  About 150 people attended.

Since moving to Hilo in 1993, Gutteling has been a volunteer team physician specializing in orthopedic medicine.

O’Brien was a basketball standout in the early 1970s, marking the beginning of Vulcan basketball at the collegiate level. He is nationally recognized as an outstanding Hawai‘i Department of Education administrator.

Nucci was a member of the 1998 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Regional Championship tennis team. More recently, he is involved with East Hawai‘i’s Junior Tennis Program and the Hilo tennis community.

Volleyball player Togiai-Walker earned National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Russell Athletic first-team all-American recognition in 1989 and still holds the single-season records for kills (517), attempts (1333) and digs (557).
