Hawaii Business Magazine reports this month on UH-Hilo: Hawaii’s Under-the-Radar Hotbed of Innovative Research. Written by LiAnne Yu, the story covers research at the University of Hawai‘i Hilo from astronomy to aquaculture to the work done with unmanned aerial vehicles in studying the lava flow in Puna last fall.
Among the researchers highlighted:
- Marianne Takamiya, chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, who is studying “how the universe is becoming more inactive and ‘sluggish’ in terms of star formations.”
- Ryan Perroy, assistant professor of geography, who is using unmanned aerial vehicles to study the recent lava flow in Puna. “His work might lead to changes in scientific research methods and could potentially help communities in the path of the lava,” writes Yu.
- Maria Haws, associate professor of aquaculture, whose research has helped bring back shellfish farming in Hawai‘i.
- Susan Jarvi, professor of pharmaceutical sciences, who is studying rat lungworm disease, which has infected people on Hawai‘i Island. Along with her research, Jarvi has created and launched educational programs for the general public.
- William “Pila” Wilson, professor of Hawaiian language, whose research in language revitalization is internationally recognized.
- Chris Bartley, a psychology professor specializing in post traumatic stress disorder in veterans, who is gaining national recognition and has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Economist and other national media.
Along with several additional researchers, the article also covers the Pacific Island Programs for Exploring Science, the Pharm2Pharm pharmacy program, and the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science graduate program, among other notable programs at UH Hilo.
