Maunakea Advisory Committee

A supporting action within the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Strategic Plan is to

“Enhance our scholarship and partnerships with the community to responsibly preserve, protect and sustain natural and cultural resources, especially Maunakea.”

The Maunakea Advisory Committee advises the UH Hilo Chancellor on campus-specific matters and initiatives to further this strategic action specifically related to Maunakea that complement the roles of the UH Board of Regents, UH System, Office of Maunakea Management, Maunakea Management Board, ‘Imiloa Astronomy Education Center, and other entities whose mission and/or specific responsibilities include the stewardship of Maunakea’s cultural, natural, educational and scientific resources. In addition, the committee is charged with providing the Chancellor guidance on implementing appropriate strategies to:

  • Facilitate conversations and engagement about Maunakea with the campus community as a priority, and with the larger community
  • Fulfill the university’s obligation to create and implement active educational and outreach programs that highlight indigenous knowledge related to Maunakea to include:
    • Cooperative internships and mentorship programs between personnel working at the astronomy facilities on Maunakea and Hawaiian communities
    • Early entry programs for at-risk children of Hawaiian ancestry and other at-risk youth in STEM-related and other curriculum
    • Utilization of Hale Pohaku for the Hawaiian Language and Hawaiian Studies programs at UH Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College along with continued use by others.
