Chancellor Irwin’s Statement on Jan. 6 National Events

UH sealLike so many of you, I was saddened and angry with what we saw transpire in Washington, DC, last week. The violence against our democracy was shocking to behold. After allowing myself a few minutes of despair, however, I reminded myself of my commitment to our profession of educating students and my firm belief that education is the antidote to ignorance and hate among so many other things.

Thank you for the work that each of you does every day to support the mission of University of Hawai‘i at Hilo and to support the success of our students, whom we send into the world as responsible citizens who understand the value and the means of civil discussions, empathy and justice, and a better life for all.

Bonnie D. Irwin
