Data (measurement of the competency)
Using the GE Rubric for Oral Communication, the two full-time LING faculty attended and evaluated the presentations separately. They then discussed their evaluations to arrive at a final average evaluation for each presentation. In total, there were 16 presentations made for the Spring 2017 semester. These 16 presentations served as the basis for the evaluations.
Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)
Spring 2017 represented only the second time that this particular course, our capstone course, was taught. The results were promising as many students scored at competent or above, but there were still several scores below. We expect to teach this course every spring semester and intend to put more emphasis on oral communication. Additionally, several other upper-division LING courses require students to make final presentations and we will continue to emphasize oral communication skills in those courses.
