B.A. English – Oral Communication

Have formal Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Student Learning Outcomes (SLOS) been developed?

Yes

Published where? (website)

BA English

Do PLOs include or imply link to Core Competency? (AY 2016-2017: Oral Communication)?

Students will communicate and argue clearly and effectively in various settings, including small group discussions, oral presentations, readings in class, and in symposiums or conferences.

Process of Core Competency Assessment:

Course (400- level)

ENG 448

Assignment

Final research project on a topic of the student’s own choice approved by the instructor.

Type of Student Artifact

Five-minute presentation of final research project followed by Q & A.

Rubric or other instrument

GE Rubric for Oral Communication

Data (measurement of the competency)

Table scores for three assessors of nineteen oral student presentations included.

Eighteen of the presentations were from ENG 448 Comics & Graphic Novels and one from ENG 499 The Novel of Manners. Students presented their end-of-semester research paper on a topic of their own choice in five-minute presentations.

The majority of the assessment results show that the students are at a competent or advanced level. Only one score by one assessor placed a student at a beginning level.

The assessment scores from three different assessors indicate that ENG 448 students have strong language competency and communicate well. Delivery technique and content analysis tend to be categories where some students score lower.

Evaluator Tabular Data

Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)

Since delivery and content analysis tend to be the weaker categories for some ENG majors, this data will be presented to the ENG dept. and collectively we will discuss how to strengthen this aspect of our PLOs. In particular, we will developed a mechanism of supporting ENG majors who need additional support for their oral communication skills.
