B.A. Chemistry – Oral Communication

Have formal Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Student Learning Outcomes (SLOS) been developed?

Yes

Published where? (website)

BA Chemistry

Do PLOs include or imply link to Core Competency? (AY 2016-2017: Oral Communication)?

At this time, the Department does not have oral communication explicitly stated in its PLOs but will review them this coming year.

Process of Core Competency Assessment:

Course (400- level)

CHEM 431L

Assignment

Fifteen minute seminar on a research proposal for a particular chemical analysis.

Type of Student Artifact

Oral presentation with visual aids.

Rubric or other instrument

GE Rubric for Oral Communication

Data (measurement of the competency)

Presentations were evaluated on April 27 and May 2, 2017 by two chemistry professors using the GE rubric for oral communication. Students were consistently graded as competent or higher in all four areas.

Evaluator Tabular Data

Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)

To improve oral communication, students will be required to submit an outline of their presentation prior to the due date. The instructor will provide feedback so the student can complete the presentation with added input from the instructor.
