An ability to integrate information from the different approaches to the study of Japan and shape it into an overall understanding of the Japanese language, culture, and behavior.
Process of Core Competency Assessment:
Course (400- level)
Students will analyze and interpret research activities and applied theories in a well-composed essay with fluid sentence structure, proper grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Type of Student Artifact
6-10 page research paper that includes an introduction, a literature review, results and discussion, and a conclusion (which is a summary of findings).

Data (measurement of the competency)
The assessment committee found that none of the papers (n=16) exhibited competency in information literacy. Ten (1) were rated as approaching competency whereas six (6) were clearly struggling and thus ranked as “beginning.”
Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)
The languages faculty will meet to discuss results and current instruction on information literacy in their courses.
