Program Learning Outcomes:

PLO 2: Demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts and methods of psychological research; this includes defining or explaining concepts, collecting, and analyzing data, presenting data in tables, conducting a scientific literature search, preparing a scientific research proposal, conducting research under the supervision of a faculty researcher.

Students are required to submit a 4–6-page literature review on set topics with a minimum of five peer-reviewed journal articles.  Papers must use APA citation formatting for citations and references.

Three readers from the department read eighteen (n = 18) theses. Inter-rater reliability was .89, indicating excellent agreement between these raters. In order from strongest to weakest skills, averages for each category are as follows: Appropriateness of Sources (3.65), Document Conventions (3.20), Evaluating Sources (2.83), and Integrating Sources (2.72).

4 papers (22%) were rated as advanced (range 3.50-3.83).

13 papers (72%) were rated as competent (range 2.58-3.42).

1 paper (6%) was rated as emerging (score of 2.42).

Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)

In Fall 2021 the Psychology Department will discuss the results of this assessment to determine appropriate next steps to enhance students’ understanding of the requirements for literature review papers, APA format for citations and references, as well as their overall writing and organization of papers. An emphasis will be placed upon providing individualized feedback to students in an effort to help them strengthen areas in which they may need the most assistance while also providing them with the opportunity to continue honing their strengths.
