Locate and utilize reliable scholarly information in academic journals and books as a part of engaging in academic linguistic research and write a cohesive research paper of at least four thousand words on a pertinent linguistic topic that is organized succinctly with at least an introduction, body, and conclusion and that includes foot/endnotes and citations.
Process of Core Competency Assessment:
Course (400- level)
The final paper assignment required students to choose a topic of interest within the field of Linguistics, to engage in research on that topic over the course of the semester, and then compose a final research paper and make a presentation of 15 minutes. The research paper came had a minimum length of 15 pages and required at least 10 secondary sources. Students chose their formatting style of preference (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) as long as they followed that style consistently.

15-page research paper in either APA, MLA, or Chicago style (these styles will be discussed as part of the course).

GE Rubric for Information Literacy
Data (measurement of the competency)
Two readers internal to the program used the the GE Rubric for information Literacy to evaluate nine (n = 9) papers. The overall averages were far above minimal competency. No student performed below a “3” on the four point scale.
Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)
All students were noted as performing at or above competency. No action needed at this time.
