Process of Core Competency Assessment:
Course (400- level)
The finished term paper must give a clear analysis and interpretation of research activities and applied theories in a well-composed essay with fluid sentence structure, proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling. (20% of overall course grade with presentation)
For term paper content, students should include the following:
Introduction: summarize your project (Japanese cultural or linguistic theme)
- Literature Review: at least five references, not including website information.
- Result and Discussion (your own interviews, surveys, data analysis, etc)
- Conclusion: summarize your findings.

The assessment committee found most papers (n = 9) exhibited competency in information literacy. Of the nine, three clearly showed problems with the use of secondary sources. The lowest scores were in using appropriate citation formatting, including quotes and bibliographies.
Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)
While students are showing adequate or near competency in utilizing secondary resources, many are having trouble adhering to a proper citation format. The assessment committee recommends: (1) clear and precise details about citation conventions should be included in the assignment; (2) that adherence to these conventions be factored in grades (making information literacy a high stakes activity); (3) utilizing multiple drafts in which the instructor can give feedback on citation formatting; and (4) requiring students to utilize Kilohana Learning Services which provides tutoring on academic writing.
