Process of Core Competency Assessment:

Course (400- level)

MGT 490 (Capstone course)- All business and accounting students take the capstone course.

Assignment

Case Study: Students study a business with a real- world problem. Individuals write a comprehensive analysis describing the business a problem, perform an environmental assessment (SWOT analysis) complete with external research, and develop solutions/ recommendations.

The paper will be submitted to the UHH Assessment Team for grading.

Data (measurement of the competency)

The benchmarks are 4 (Advanced), 3 (Competent), 2 (Emerging), and 1 (Beginning). Scores below 3 (Competent) are not acceptable for business majors close to graduation. Unfortunately, only 15 of the 36 papers had an average score of 3 or higher. Five of the 36 papers had scores below 2.

The Assessment Committee recommends making two courses in the core, BUS 290 (Critical Thinking) and MGT 300 (Mgt, Orgs & Human Behavior) permanently Writing Intensive.
