Each student will select and research an area of focus from among the genres/historical periods studied during the semester, or the music of another genre/historical period chosen to amplify the semester’s study. They will then craft a research paper. The paper must cite four sources at minimum, one must be a scholarly resource (i.e. academic journal, dissertation, thesis, etc. with instructor approval), may also include books, articles (newspaper or magazine), and CD liner notes. Wikipedia and textbooks are NOT considered acceptable sources. All intext-citations and bibliography must adhere to ML, Chicago or APA format.

Data (measurement of the competency)
Two readers external to the department served as evaluators and read sixteen papers using the Written Communication Rubric (WC) and the Writing Intensive Rubric (WI). However, three papers were run through Turnitin and proved problematic. These were redacted leaving thirteen (n = 13) Scoring follows.
Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)
The chair of the department of Performing Arts will reach out to Kilohana for ideas on using Turnitin as an instructional tool as well as possibly developing additional student support for writing in the disciplines (music, dance, and drama).
