Data (measurement of the competency)

Two readers from the department undertook evaluations of the student presentations. Both evaluators noted that the number of students is admittedly small this year, which reflects the fact that there were only 4 students in the LING 490 course in the Spring 2022 semester. Nonetheless, the Linguistics Program has made a concerted effort to be consistent in this activity of assessment by choosing students in LING 490 given its status as the Program’s capstone course. The Program does not see the value in assessments that change from course to course and level to level each semester and thus has sought consistency in its assessment by choosing students expected to be at a certain level in LING 490. To be sure, however, if the number of students in LING 490 continues to be small in future semesters (hopefully not, though), the Program may have to choose another course to assess.

Additionally, the 100% inter-rater percentages for this assessment are a result of criticism of past assessments from the administration for low inter-rater reliability. The Program did a better job of providing the evaluators with guidance in the assessment activity, something that is assumed to be desired based on past criticism.
