 Assignment

Final research paper

Type of Student Artifact

Students will write a 7-10 page term paper that synthesizes clear analysis, research, and applied theories. Each paper must have the following: (1) Introduction, (2) Literature Review, (3) Discussion, and (4) Conclusion. Papers must have fluid sentence structure, proper grammar, punctuation and spelling; papers mist be submitted in 12 point font, double spaced, MLA or other proper citation format, and include a Japanese summary.

Rubric or other instrument

GE Rubric for Written Communication

Data (measurement of the competency)

Two readers external to the department served as evaluators and read seven (n = 7)  papers using the Written Communication Rubric (WC) and the Writing Intensive Rubric (WI).  Overall WI scores suggest that the students met minimum competency or higher in WI learning goals: learning and using material in the course, utilizing academic prose, and integrating analysis. However, evaluators did note that some students are not native speakers of English and thus the overall level of prose—especially in instances where they are exerting an argument—may not have been as polished as would be expected from a 400-level course. The recommendation is for such students to check with a tutor prior to final submission to work on tone and style.

Evaluator Tabular Data

Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)

In reviewing the data and comments by evaluators, the instructor will require students to visit Kilohana prior to the submission of the final paper.
