Data (measurement of the competency)

Two readers from the department undertook evaluations of the student presentations. Both evaluators noted many students went beyond simple summary and added critical analysis and opinion. In terms of delivery, although extemporaneous vocal delivery was observed in most, there was a lack of nonverbal delivery via gesturing and eye contact. Some students seemed to be reading from the article or a script. This lessens the connection between the speaker and the audience. Two presented opted to use visual aid presentation slides. The presentation slides were helpful, and conveyed a deeper level of mastery, or competency, of the material as they really helped the audience to see diagrams/theoretical models and other pertinent information from the journal article. We suggest that future presentations might also utilize visual aids, especially when reporting research questions/hypotheses and results.
