Have formal Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Student Learning Outcomes (SLOS) been developed?
Yes.
Published where? (website)
See Administration of Justice SLOs, Curriculum Matrix, and Rubrics. SLOs are also published in the UH Hilo Student Catalog for Administration of Justice.
Do PLOs include or imply link to Core Competency? (AY 2022-2023: Written Communication)?
Yes.
Process of Core Competency Assessment:
Course (300- or 400-level)
AJ 470: WI Seminar in Administration of Justice. For Spring 2023, the Course was also designated as Writing Intensive (WI)
Type of Student Artifact
Research paper
Assignment
Students will do the following: identify their research question, describe why it is important, summarize and synthesize existing work on the question, outline their research strategy, and use evidence drawn from their research to defend an argument that addresses the question. Papers should include a title and contain 10-12-pages of text (not including citations), and use a 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Citations should be formatted in Chicago style.
Rubric or other instrument
GE Rubric for Written Communication and rubric for Writing Intensive (WI)
Data (measurement of the competency)
Two readers, one from the program and one from another institution, served as evaluators and read twenty (n = 20) papers using the Written Communication Rubric (WC) and the Writing Intensive Rubric (WI). Scoring indicates students’ strengths are in content and language; students were largely competent in these areas, demonstrating understanding of their topics and using appropriate language Students seemed to struggle most with thesis development (incomplete or underdeveloped thesis statements) and to some extent with organization. For WI, students appeared to write competently across categories. Some students used simplistic or colloquial language at times.
Action Taken in Response to the Data (What will you do in response to the Findings?)
The instructor will incorporate writing workshops into the course so that students can work in groups and engage in peer review to help develop thesis statements, polish writing styles, and improve paper organization.
Date of Last Program Review
2015 (program review is currently on hold due to reorganization)
