Recent Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Award to create equitable pathways to STEM graduate education
Congratulations to UH Mānoa director of the Native Hawaiian Science and Engineering Mentorship Program Kelli Ching and IOA-LSAMP Program Manager Dr. Mārata Tamaira who co-wrote and were awarded a $250,000 seed grant to establish a pilot program titled "The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander STEM Consortium (NHPISC)," the goal of which is to create equitable pathways to STEM graduate education. The 2-year program will be led by Director Ching as PI with a view to expanding it to a 5-year grant in the future.
Inaugural IOA Data Camp
In October 2020 IOA-LSAMP and Chaminade University launched an IOA-wide online data analytics proficiency course. IOA students from Hawaiʻi and the broader Pacific participated. The Data Camp was designed to introduce students to data analytics and to start the process of upskilling or reskilling participants through a set of curated hands-on, mentored learning modules. Congratulations to our Alliance partner Palau Community College!
Palau Community College (PCC) President Patrick Tellei and PCC Associate Professor Vernice Yuji will receive nearly $600,000 over three years to support enhanced marine and environmental science training for Pacific Island community college students. Read the full story on the SOEST website.
