UH Hilo Way Finder: A Four-­‐Year Academic and Career Planning Guide

    Freshman Year( 0-24 Credits)

    Academic Planning

    • Take applicable placement assessments for English, Math, Chemistry, and/or Language
    • Asa first semester, first time freshman, you will be given a guaranteed scheduled (FreGAS) based on your major, assessment results, and timeliness of your decision to attend UH Hilo
    • Make sure you understand Financial Aid’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy
    • Improve your study skills, using the different tutoring resources on campus
    • Begin to explore the kind of campus programs you want to participate in

    Career Planning

    • Enroll in a University 101 course your first semester at UH Hilo
    • Take a fun, fast career assessment used to identify personal interests, skills, and values
    • Make and appointment with an Advising Center Advisor to discuss your identified career interests and ideas
    • Begin to explore volunteer opportunities, summer jobs, internships, and on-campus positions
    • Visit the Center for Global Education or National Student Exchange office to discuss plans of studying abroad

    Sophomore Year (25-58 Credits)

    Academic Planning

    • Join a campus organization that interests you
    • Continue completion of General Education requirements
    • If decided about a major, declare it at the Office of the Registrar, and begin working with an Advisor in that major
    • Ifundecided about a major, see a Career Advisor in the Advising Center
    • Make sure you understand the Financial Aid implications of your academic decisions

    Career Planning

    • Identify different career interests and begin researching these areas
    • Meet with a Career Advisor to further explore and develop career goals and strategies
    • Explore internships, volunteering, or other work experiences that relate to your career goals
    • Participate in campus organizations/activities. Seek leadership positions to gain work-related skills

    Junior Year (59-89 Credits)

    Academic Planning

    • To insure timely progress toward graduation, declare your major by your Junior Year, if not earlier
    • Pursue coursework in your major and finish general education and integrative requirements
    • If you are a transfer student be sure to clear up transfer credit issues with the Admissions office
    • Speak to a faculty advisor about specializations and current trends in the field
    • Join any students organization affiliated with your academic department
    • If eligible, apply for scholarships and other aid to help continue financing your education

    Career Planning

    • Gain exposure and career‐related experience through volunteering, internships, and part‐time jobs
    • Interview alumni and professionals in the career fields you are interested in
    • Attend workshops on resume preparation, the job search, and interview techniques
    • If applicable, be aware of deadline dates to apply for entrance exams and graduate school programs

    Senior Year (89+ Credits)

    Academic Planning

    • Complete all major coursework and any other graduation requirements
    • Apply for graduation at the Office of the Registrar, 10 months before your graduation date
    • Clear up any graduation discrepancies before your graduating semester
    • Explore directed study, special project, or internship possibilities by your major department
    • If applicable, complete application for graduate or professional study. Take required entrance exams

    Career Planning

    • Meet with a Career Advisor to discuss job search or graduate/professional school alternatives
    • Update resume, have it reviewed by Career Advising staff
    • Research organizations and jobs related to your field or interests
    • Improve interview skills through mock interviews
    • Prepare for and attend career fairs to meet employers
    • Join UH Hilo’s Alumni Association for network benefits and opportunities
