Upward Bound is a year-round program. Once the student has been completely accepted into the program, we will work with them throughout the whole academic year & each summer! However, there are slight differences regarding the services available in each component.
During the academic year, students meet with an assigned Program Coordinator monthly, work with tutors on specific school assignments to maintain a "B" average, and attend monthly Saturday College Preparatory Academic sessions.
Upward Bound students participate in various activities: college and career fairs, college campus tours, community service projects, and other educational or cultural enrichment activities.
Free services also include: fee waivers for SAT and ACT tests, access to university facilities and services. Students who complete all requirements of the program are eligible to participate in fully paid college tours of universities outside the general area.
Students who participate in our intensive academic summer program at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, will be placed in core high school courses (i.e. Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Science, and/or Foreign Languages) that will prepare them for the subject in their regular high school in the following year.
*All expenses are paid for, including meals and housing in a university residence hall.
During six-week Summer Academy, students share a room in a residence hall with four other high school students. They will be interacting with instructors and residential advisors, attend field trips and cultural events, be exposed to personal development workshops, and participate in intramural activities -much like regular college students on a university campus!
