Academic Year 2018-2019 Positions

Tutors

Tutor

Tutors Provide tutoring, academic advising, college and career planning services to students at assigned high schools throughout the school year; write reports on tutoring sessions; help plan and implement monthly Saturday Academies, special activities and projects assigned by the staff; participate in the program's in-service training sessions; and evaluations; drive to high schools on a weekly basis; and perform general office work and other duties as assigned.

Tutors in the Kona Area WANTED.

Tutor/Instructor

Assess the educational needs of participants and provide instruction and tutorial assistance in requisite subject area(s).  Subject areas may include one or more of the following: English; Mathematics; Science; and select electives (computers, foreign language, learning skills, life skills, career guidance, journalism, etc.). Instructors are to evaluate the progress and performance of each student, complete reports, attend training sessions, meet with Program Coordinator and Director as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.

Student Assistant

Prepare program documents and materials. Assist in dissemination of program materials to interested persons. Handle telephone, email and in office inquiries about program and application process. Accept information form applicants and assist in processing completed applications for review and approval. Assist in maintenance of confidential program, institutional and federal documents, files and reports, consistent with professional office practices and standards. Type and process personnel, payroll documents, process forms for the procurement of supplies and services. Assist in the development and reproduction of instructional materials. Assist with the implementation and evaluation of program activities/events.

Student Mentor

This position is dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented students by recruiting and, providing programming and services to meet the specific needs of the target population(s).

Computer Technology Student Assistant

Daily support and trouble-shooting, maintaining and upgrading computer hardware and software in the department, including basic diagnostic and preventative maintenance and minor repair on equipment and software, providing some technology instruction, training and consultation to departmental, assisting maintaining the Upward Bound Web Site, and maintaining proper software licensing on all department computers.

Provide instruction in an interdisciplinary curriculum to high school students preparing for future entrance into postsecondary education; evaluate and report student progress in academic performance and participation, and; serve as positive student role-model and mentor

Instructors

Over-Night Residential Advisor - Team Leader

Team LeadersServe as Residential Staff Leader: lead and/or participate in all residential staff training sessions; provide guidance and assistance to residential staff through individual and group meetings; implement activities to fulfill the goals of the residential experience; provide for a safe, secure, orderly and clean living experience; communicate with UB Director, university housing and other personnel on issues pertaining to the safety, security and well-being of students and residential staff.

Over-Night Residential Advisor description

Under supervision of the Lead Residential Advisor: Supervise students during all program-sponsored activities and events, including dinner meals, recreation and field trips, throughout the week, accounting for participants at all times; provide tutoring assistance as needed; address residential needs and concerns of participants; maintain effective communication and cooperation with Resident Team Leader, Upward Bound central staff, University Housing and other personnel concerning issues pertaining to the well-being and safety of students; assist participants in meeting the meal requirements of USDA Food Service Program; monitor student behavior and provide encouragement and constructive feedback to students who are in minor violation of the residential and programs rules; write and submit incident reports for violation of rules and agreements; attend all training sessions and staff meetings, including individual meetings with the Residential Team Leader. Perform other duties as assigned by the Residential Team Leader.

WeekEND Residential Advisor description

Live-in and supervise high school participants in a residential hall on the UH-Hilo campus for 6 weekends during the summer. Supervise students during all program-sponsored activities and events, including meals, recreation and field trips, throughout the weekend, accounting for participants at all times; address residential needs and concerns of participants; maintain effective communication and cooperation with Residential Team Leader, Upward Bound central staff, University Housing and other personnel concerning issues pertaining to the well-being and safety of students; assist participants in meeting the meal requirements of USDA Food Service Program; monitor student behavior and provide encouragement and constructive feedback to students who are in minor violation of the residential and programs rules; write and submit incident reports for violation of rules and agreements; attend all training sessions and staff meetings, including individual meetings with the Residential Team Leader. Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Program Coordinators.

WeekDAY Residential Advisor description

Under supervision of the Upward Bound Office: Supervise students during all program-sponsored activities and events while on duty, including meals, recreation and field trips, throughout the week, accounting for participants at all times. Address residential needs and concerns of participants. Maintain effective communication and cooperation with Resident Manager, Upward Bound central staff, University Housing and other personnel concerning issues pertaining to the well-being and safety of students. Conduct meal counts for USDA Food Service Program. Monitor student behavior and provide encouragement and constructive feedback to students. Write and submit incident reports for students who are in violation of the Upward Bound contractual Residential Agreement. Attend all training sessions and staff meetings, including individual meetings with the Residential Team Leader. Perform other duties as assigned by the Upward Bound Office.

Meal Checker description

Under supervision of the Fiscal Officer and Director; supervise and accurately log down students absent and/or present during breakfast, lunch, and dinner hours for those students participating in the Upward Bound residential program. Meal Checkers must provide guidance, and knowledge about meal requirements to students about the USDA Summer Food Service Program. Must accurately fill out and turn in USDA meal requirements forms daily to the Upward Bound office; students missing from meals must be reported immediately to the "front office" staff.
