Teacher Training Workshop

Natural Hazards in Hawai`i– Meet the Experts

Field Trips/ PDERI credit/ Resources

Spring 2010 is here, and the UH-Hilo Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes (CSAV) is now offering Teacher Training Workshops on Volcanoes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis, and Hurricanes here on the Big Island at no cost to teachers!

The workshops cover the science behind each natural hazard, the impacts of those hazards on our island community, and ways residents can mitigate effects of these natural hazards. At the same time, workshop sessions address ways in which these natural hazards can be used as subject matter in the classroom to address Hawaii State Content Area Benchmarks in Science and Social Studies, as well as applications across content areas including Language Arts and Math.

Teachers may choose which of the four workshops they want to attend. Attend them all, or just one or two! In addition, there is the option to earn PDERI credits by attending the workshops (2 credits per workshop).

Each workshop segment will meet for two non-consecutive Saturdays, allowing teachers a break between sessions. The first Saturday will feature a public presentation in the morning (9 – 12) by guest speakers from the scientific and local community. During the brown-bag lunch hour, there will be a private Q&A session, just for teachers, to "meet with the experts." This will be followed by hands-on demonstrations, discussions of resources, and explanations of how to interpret scientific data for classroom use.  On the second Saturday, participants will be in the field looking at hazard-related features and exploring the local geology of our island under the guidance of a subject matter expert.
