How advising works

How we help

Much of the initial advising new students receive prior to entering UH Hilo comes from the Advising Center. Each summer, the Advising Center plays a leading role in advising incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Advisors in our office help new students get acclimated to the academic journey ahead of them, while also serving as bridges to the advisor they will be assigned to in their major. If students do not have a major, they are assigned to an advisor in the Advising Center. Based on their needs, students may also choose to work with one or more advisors in various offices around campus. New students get assigned an advisor by the 3rd week of their first semester at UH Hilo.

Other advising options

In addition to academic advisors, UH Hilo has other programs that offer specialized advising services to specific populations of students.

With a major

Current students who have declared a major are automatically assigned a faculty advisor within their department.

To find out who your advisor is, log in to your STAR degree program. If your advisor is unavailable (or if you wish to be assigned a different advisor) just visit the division office which your major falls under to get the ball rolling.

Questions about General Education and other graduation requirements can also be answered by the Advising Center. Setting up an appointment with the Advising Center is easy. Just call (808) 932-7776  or email uhhadvis@hawaii.edu
