Assistant Professor of Astronomy (86373)
University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, College of Arts & Sciences, 9-month, tenure-track, general funds, appointment to begin approximately August 1, 2013, pending availability of funds. Appointee will be eligible to apply for preferential observation time at Mauna Kea observatories. Collaborations with the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi and with local observatories, especially the University of Hawaiʻi’s Institute for Astronomy, will be encouraged. The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is currently evaluating the implementation of a small observatory on the Mauna Kea summit for use in its undergraduate program.
The successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses, engage in astronomy research that involves undergraduate students, participate in community and University service, and help develop our astronomy program in a way that optimally benefits from of our unique proximity to the Mauna Kea summit and the local scientific community.
Doctoral level degree from an accredited university in astronomy, physics or closely related field. Teaching experience (classroom and/or laboratory) in astronomy and/or physics and a track record in astronomy-related research.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level especially large-enrollment introductory Astronomy classes for non-majors. Evidence of ability to perform independent research in observational astronomy. Success in securing extramural grants. Experience in community outreach activities. Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse student, university and community population.
Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
