As a residential campus featuring a liberal arts focus, UH Hilo attracts students from across the state and abroad. The campus is located approximately three miles from the Hilo Airport and is within close proximity to movie theaters, shopping malls, and convenience stores. See Hilo and the Big Island for lots of activities and sights and other information.

UH Hilo's Campus Visitation Program

  • Individual meeting with an Admissions Counselor
  • Campus tour highlighting classrooms, residence halls and research facilities

During the Fall and Spring semesters, the tour may also include:

  • Meeting with faculty from your prospective major
  • A brief first-hand experience of a class in session
  • Lunch in the Campus Center Dining Hall (cash purchase)

Please contact the Admissions Office or fill out the online Tour Request form to schedule a campus tour at least two weeks prior to your visit. Tours are generally given Monday-Friday (except holidays) between 9:00am and 2:00pm HST. We will need the date(s) of your visit, the number of people in your party, and your prospective major. Tours arranged with less than two weeks notice may not include meetings with professors or attendence in lectures (Faculty meetings may not be included during Summer).

For those on a neighbor island or from the mainland it would be advantageous to inquire about air/room/car packages provided by various travel agencies. We invite you to visit our beautiful campus and the unique physical environment the Big Island has to offer. It takes about two and a half hours to reach the west side of the island, which may not seem as long due to the scenic drive.

If you are an adventurer, you must experience our islands' unique features such as the world's most active volcanoes, snowcapped mountains in winter, extraordinary beaches, and lush green valleys.

Our island weather ranges from sunny days, occasional trade winds, tropical rainfalls to rainbow filled days and stellar nights. Hilo's array of exotic flora is enriched by our generous annual rainfall. View the Nani Mau Gardens, botanical gardens, and orchid shows.

Take time to experience our multi-cultural activities featuring canoe regattas, hula competitions, arts/crafts fairs and other entertaining activities offered year round.

Visitors are given numerous opportunities to feast on the different foods found only in Hawaii and see our unique specialty/novelty shops. We encourage you to try our assortment of "local-style" mixed plates and discover your favorite dish.
