The US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Class Details

This class teaches you the basics of small boat sailing, gives you practical, hands on experience with small boats and provides a fun learning experience for nautical knowledge!

This class is aimed at the novice sailor who wants to feel confident in being able to sail a small boat on their own.  Upon completion of the class you are in the UH Sailing Club and receive a logbook showing proof you have earned your Small Boat Level One Sailor from US Sailing.

Small Boat SailingWe start the class with some fun nautical nonsense, learn some basic boat part names and some sailor terminology; to get you talking like a Sea worthy Sailor! We also go over some basic principles that are the foundation of why we are able to sail.

There are two classes this fall

One in September and one in October!

The September class starts on the 14th!! Sign up now in the Student Life Center Office!!

The first full day is devoted to how to set up a boat and what everything is called on the boat. Then we go over getting in and falling out of the boat (capsizing), how to find where the wind is coming from and how to steer the boat. Then we go out on the water and practice our new learned skills!

Day two- We start with some knots and quickly review what we learned the day before.  This day we spend lots of time on the water practicing proper steering and turning. We even learn how to stop the boat quickly and navigate obstacle courses!

Day three- As our sails fill with wind our technique is becoming almost graceful. We work on how to sail faster and with more precision! How to do fun things like dock, pull alongside something, pick someone up if they fall overboard and even how to sail backwards.  All while practicing our basics all over again!!

The last day we spend the first part doing our final test on the water and working with the paper work side of the class, and then we have a course completion potluck and join the club for an afternoon of sailing with friends. If any additional work is needed this is when that happens! Small Boat Sailing Class
