This is the UH Hilo report. News about people, events and programs at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

A UH Hilo sophomore majoring in computer science, has won the nationwide Sodexo University Dining Services “Share That U Care” contest, which encourages students to spread the word about their favorite charities and to help make a difference through charitable giving.

Cody Fred was selected from thousands of contestants and chose as his charity, the Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kurtistown, where he worked as a volunteer during high school. The facility is a no-kill sanctuary that guarantees a home for unwanted, abandoned, abused or otherwise neglected animals. Any dog or cat brought in that goes un-adopted, is given a permanent home there instead of being euthanized. His selection earns Rainbow Friends a charitable contribution of $2,500 donated on behalf of Fred and Sodexo Campus Services.
