This is the UH Hilo report. News about people, events and programs at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.
Dr. Maria Haws, an associate professor of aquaculture has become the new director of the Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resource Center in Keaukaha. The Center is the largest university research center in Hawaiʻi dedicated to aquaculture.
Haws is responsible for overseeing research to help clear the way for farmers to build a shellfish industry in Hawaiʻi. She recently assisted a mainland oyster farmer to create the Hawaiian Shellfish Hatchery LLC in Hawaiian Paradise Park, which supplies oyster larvae to oyster farmers.
The Center also operates an aquaculture workforce development program. The program annually provides 20-30 students with the necessary skills to work in the industry along with 2-3 years of undergraduate work experience, and enjoys a high post graduation placement rate.
