This is the UH Hilo report. News about people, events and programs at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. At year’s end the University will bid aloha to a person whose name and face have been synonymous with UH Hilo for over two decades.

As Director of University Relations, Gerald De Mello worked with Big Island lawmakers, federal and county officials, business, labor and community leaders to bring about some of the most significant capital improvements in UH Hilo’s history. The University Classroom Building, Student Life Center, Science and Technology Building, along with the new Student Services and College of Hawaiian Language Buildings, and the University Village Phase I student housing now under construction are among the projects that have won legislative approval during his tenure.

De Mello was honored for his service with a gathering in November. The event attracted a virtual who’s-who from around Hawaiʻi, including Governor Neil Abercrombie who proclaimed the date of November 30 as Gerald De Mello Day in Hawaiʻi.
