This is the UH Hilo report. News about people, events and programs at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

The first Adopt-a-Beehive with Alan Wong Scholarships have been presented to Juliana Graper, Tayler Manriki and Brittany Ann Rocha. Each student received a $1,000 award from the renowned chef for completing the introductory beekeeping course, maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and enrolling in advanced beekeeping.

In its first year, the program raised funds for student support, instructional costs, equipment and supplies to expand the beekeeping curriculum and paired nearly 100 adopters of bee colonies with beekeeping students.

Wong, Chancellor Don Straney and Entomology Professor Lorna Tsutsumi were recently honored by the state senate for their roles in the program. Each received a Certificate of Recognition from Agriculture Committee Vice- Chair Gilbert Kahele, who along with Committee Chair Clarence Nishihara, co-adopted a beehive.
