For Immediate Release

Film series continues with Guimba the Tyrant

The University of Hawaii at Hilo film series, Cinema from Africa and the Diaspora, continues on Thursday, November 20, with Guimba the Tyrant (1995), by Oumar Sissoko, Mali. The film begins at 6:30 p.m. in UH Hilo’s UCB 100. General admission is $3.00; no admission charge for currently registered UH Hilo/Hawai`i Communitiy College students.

Winner of the most prestigious award in African cinema, the Grand Prize at FESPACO '95, Guimba the Tyrant is acclaimed as one of the most visually ravishing African films ever made. A timeless tale of a tyrant's hubris and his downfall at the hands of his people, the work is reminiscent of MacBeth or Richard III. The film's narrative embodies the process of revealing truth behind the facade of despotic authority. Shot in the legendary city of Djenné, the film is in Bambara and Peul with English subtitles.
