UH Hilo offers summer art program for grades 5-12
‘Ike Hohonu: Art as Expression is a summer art program currently being offered by the University of Hawaii at Hilo for students in grades 5-12. The sessions are designed to encourage young people’s creative and intellectual growth through meaningful art experiences in a supportive environment.
Classes in the non-credit course are from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 16 through July 3 at UH Hilo’s Manono Street Campus, Building 394, Rooms 1 and 2. Cost for the course is $60 tuition with a $10 material fee. Enrollment is limited.
The classes stress creativity and personal expression, provide instruction in the use of materials and in techniques for rendering images as well as introduce students to art history and culture. Materials and supplies are provided by the studio sessions. Processes include drawing, painting and printmaking. Each process will be related to the artwork of an artist, culture, style or time period. Video and slide presentations will enhance the hands-on studio sessions.
At the end of the sessions, student work will be exhibited publicly, giving students the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments during the class.
