Summer fun sailing program at UH Hilo offered

University of Hawai`i at Hilo’s Summer Recreational Sailing program

It’s summer. TV is reruns. Video games are boring. What to do? Get outside. Get exercise. Learn new skills. Learn to sail this summer in the University of Hawai`i at Hilo’s Summer Recreational Sailing program.

Open to adults, students in junior high, high school, and college, participants will learn to sail in a 14-foot sailboat, called the Flying Junior, or the FJ, which is sailed with two people. Classes run Monday to Friday from 11 am to 3pm and are taught from Radio Bay in Keaukaha. Classes begin the week of June 9th and continue, each week, until the week of July 28th. Advanced classes are offered for students who complete beginning levels. Classes are $100 per week, with a $50 equipment fee, for a total of $150 per week. All boats and equipment are provided.

“Sailing is a physical and mental sport, challenging and rewarding,” said Margaret Haig, dean of the college of continuing education and community service (CCECS). “You only need to be able to swim to learn to sail. Hilo Bay, with its sheltered waters, is an ideal venue for sailing.

“We have a world-class sailor right here in Hilo,” she added. “Jacques Peysson will teach sailing classes, from beginning to competitive sailing, for international competitions.”

Peysson is a French national champion, representing France in international Olympic classes. He has competed in Europe and throughout the world. He continued in sailing, as a sailing director in the South of France and in the Caribbean. Now he calls Hilo home.

“There is no more beautiful sight in the world than Hilo’s bayfront, stretching to the heights of Mauna Kea, a sight only enjoyed from the bay,” Peysson said. “There is a tremendous sense of accomplishment, competing in a sport that demands both physical skills and mental competitiveness.”

Call CCECS at (808) 974-7664 to register for classes and to get directions to the sailing site.

Classes will also be offered in the fall for schools and community sailors. Call Peysson to arrange special times and dates for your school team. Coaching and instruction will be provided.
