First Vulcan Student Leadership Achievement Awards at UH Hilo

Nineteen students and two faculty/staff advisors at the University of Hawaii at Hilo were honored May 9 at the first Vulcan Student Leadership Achievement Awards. The awardees were recognized for their contributions to the UH Hilo community in 10 award categories.

“I am pleased that UH Hilo is taking the opportunity to recognize these most deserving student leaders,” said Chancellor Rose Tseng.

Lehua Waipa Ah Nee, Heather Kaluna and Abigail Popoitai all received the Senior Recognition Award. Outstanding Scholar Award winners were Nathan Olson, La‘akea Yoshida and Yekaterina Kharitonova. Tilden-Christen Miguel, Desiree U‘ilani Wallace and Jamil Dyer were honored with the Distinguished Student Award. The Vulcan spirit award went to Masayuki Osako. Mona Livsey and Timothy Fallis earned the Outstanding Student Service Award. Emerging Leader Award plaques went to Asa Aue, Matthew Hassenritter and Toni Makaniokekai Gregg. And Beverly Tese garnered the Most Outstanding Freshman Award.

Dr. Lorna Arita-Tsutsumi and Dr. William Concepcion were honored with Outstanding Advisor Awards. The Agriculture Club and Keaomalamalama Hawaiian Club received the Outstanding Registered Independent Student Organization (RISO) Service Award, and the Student Activities Council received the Outstanding Chartered Student Organization (CSO) Award.

Awardees were selected by a student selection and planning committee advised by Myhraliza Aala, the coordinator of new student programs & special projects for the vice chancellor of student affairs. Committee members were: Kira McCully, Amy Ueunten, Graciela De La Cruz, Stephanie Rios, and Rebekah McKoy, assisted by student staff Lori Fowler and Eddie Johns.
