For Immediate Release

Learn about the koto, reach for the stars and get the most from your dietary supplements with a trio of non-credit courses from the University of Hawaii at Hilo College of Continuing Education and Community Service (CCECS).

Former Hiloan Darin Miyashiro, a koto instructor at UH Manoa and Sawai Koto Kai Hawai`i, returns to give a lecture and performance of short pieces to demonstrate the history, culture and techniques of the koto, a 13-stringed Japanese zither. The event is on Sunday, February 10 from 2-3:30 p.m. in UCB 100 on the UH Hilo campus. It is sponsored by the Kinzo and Fumiko Nishimura Japanese Cultural Fund. There is no admission charge, but registration is required.

Dr. Richard Crowe, ‘Imiloa resident astronomer and professor of physics and astronomy at UH Hilo, will present an overview of Hawai`i’s night skies and discuss Hawaiian astronomy through legend on Tuesday, February 12, from 2-4 p.m. at the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center. The fee is $20, with a $5 discount for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members, and includes admission to ‘Imiloa and the planetarium show.

And naturopathic physician Dr. Britta Zimmer will guide participants through the maze of dietary supplements. You’ll learn how to choose high-quality supplements, safely incorporate them into your existing medical program, and read supplement labels. You’ll also learn about your own supplement regimen and how to distinguish misleading claims made by many supplement companies. The class is on two Tuesdays, February 19 and 26, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The first session will be in UCB 111, and the second at Island Naturals in Hilo. The fee is $25, with a $5 discount for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members.
