For Immediate Release
Thanks to the creativity of volunteer organizers from the Chinese Civic Association and the generosity of the greater Hilo community, the University of Hawaii at Hilo was assisted this fall in the successful launch of its new M.A. program in China-U.S. Relations. Proceeds from the Chinese Civic Association’s annual “Taste of Asia” event funded three $1,000 student scholarships and some $1500 worth of library reference materials to support this new program, the first of its kind in the U.S.
Recipients of the scholarships are Lola Salmova, Richard Champion and Joanne Zhang, three of the first nine students registered in the new M.A. program. UH Hilo’s Edwin A. Mookini Library is another beneficiary, receiving a generous grant to purchase scholarly books on China and an online database bibliography of Asian Studies.
UH Hilo’s M.A. in China-U.S. Relations is an interdisciplinary program focusing on the cross-cultural study of China and its relation to America’s role in Pacific affairs. The program will prepare students for a broad spectrum of professions, including international education, business and tourism, government, cultural exchange, and foreign service.
The Chinese Civic Association is a non-profit membership organization founded in 1991 for the purpose of preserving Chinese culture and heritage on the Big Island. Nate Chang is the current president, and Bea Lau is activities chair, in which she has been responsible for developing and chairing the association’s signature “Taste of Asia” event. First offered in the spring of 2003, “Taste of Asia” brings together Hilo-area chefs to offer delectable samples of Asian cuisine against a background of music and dance entertainment. Proceeds from “Taste of Asia” specifically benefit UH Hilo and its Asian studies programs. The next “Taste of Asia” will take place on Sunday, April 24, 2005.
